address

Just to keep everyone posted....

on August 1 I will be leaving my lovley home in Godomey, Benin...taking a flight to Brussels...spending the night in Brussels and then continuing home - arriving in Chicago on August 3!!!   I will be spending a little more than a week at home before moving accross the country to start graduat school (on August 13) at Yale School of Forestry ( www.yale.edu/environment).  My new address will be:

84 edwards st. #1
new haven, ct 06511

and I assume I will aquire a US phone number somewhere along the way....

Benin has been good the last month.  It is now full rainy season, thus it is considerably cooler and often pouring rain.  I returned from the North three weeks ago and madly put together a presentation on my research for the First National Protected Areas Day.   I've been in Cotonou since, taking care of final reports and logistic type things.   I am also editing the English part of the Protected Areas website...so that should be available soon.... Yesterday was a highlight.  Jennifer and I made a fourth of July meal. In the evening Prof Sinsin (my advisor) came over for his own private hamburger....first time I have cooked for my professor!   Upcoming are trips to the North and the East.....I am trying to scout yoruba-speaking sites in case I decide to return next summer to do my Master's Thesis in Yorubaland (I will be studying Yoruba at Yale).

Ok.  Keep in Touch.

now i am on a tour of america...

New York

California

Colorado

Illinois

Also on the trip was Michigan...and still left is Conneticut.....

Lara visited!

Here are some photos from when Lara visited (Feb 22- March 15). Lara is a friend from Bishop California...we began in Cotonou and then went North to start my research project (going to every one of about 25 villages and holding a introductory meeting with the cheifs, the traditional healers and all the old people). Well I mostly did that and Lara went on safaris...but that was cut short because of elections. Elections went fairly well, there were a few instances of votes having to be thrown out - and yayi boni won - ie not the candiate who would have one if it were a corrupt system and the people in power did whatever it took to stay in power. On election day (Sunday March 4 or so) we got a ride south with our dutch friends - and then on the following Tuesday - headed to Togo for a fun filled adventure of markets, rainforests, butterflies, waterfalls, motercycles, uncooked pizza and more! On the 16th, we both came back to America - me to look at grad schools and lara to work.

Lara has shared photos with you.

Around Cotonou

I appologize for not updating in a long long time....this would be due to spending time writing and trying to upload the time below and it not working and then my life picking up.....so here is a conclusion from november 11 or so...and i will try to bring you up to April 1.....

Well I can't say my week has been all that exciting. I gave my first talk about my project here to the Association Beninois de Pastoralism: Le Rôle des Guérisseurs Traditionnels Dans La Conservation des Ressources Naturelles
; Présentation Préliminaire, Natalie Ceperley, 19 Novembre, 2005, Association Béninoise de Pastoralisme, Laboratoire d’Ecologie Appliqué, Faculté des Science Agronomiques, Université Abomey-Calavi, Bénin. I was initiated into the American Community at Thanksgiving and then Saturday softball. - Amazing how many Americans there are in Cotonou. I went the beach. I went to class. I had some meetings with healers. I hung out with the other fulbright students. I took my first exam. And I am almost done with grad school apps. I tried to arrange to take some trips to forests and other research sites that interest me, but they are going to happen next week ( the unarrivable next week). I have been reading memoires of students who worked in ethnobotany and in Pendjari Park. I am excited for when I do field work - but I think its good for me to go through this process of refining my objectives and methods before I go. I am supposed to meet a Dutch couple this week who is doing my exact project. I finished reading Maryse Conde - Segu. I recommend it to anyone who wants to get a feel for the reasons that West Africa is the way it is. I liked how it tied together the history of where I was last year with the history of where I am now. I have been thinking about how my experience here is so shaped by my Mauritanian experience. These are some pictures, not my own, from around campus. The man in one is Pierre who does research in Pahenco.
